Thomas' Bakery

This morning as I was enjoying English muffins, I noticed that the term “nooks and crannies” is a registered trademark. I often belittle marketing effort but I have to concede on this one. Nooks and crannies was a good one. 30 years later and I still remember. I would be hard-pressed to use the word “cranny” (or its plural) in any other context.

I can’t help but try to envision how that descriptive phrase originated. Was it just one guy charged with the lackluster task of describing English muffins and it just came to him? Was it a team effort? I can just see the memo:

English muffin trademark brainstorming meeting

9:00 a.m. in the conference room

Bagels will be served

Did one guy go to the meeting with “________ and crannies” scribbled on a note pad? Did they first have “Crannies and nooks” but it just didn’t sound right? Was there a “nook” camp and a “cranny” camp and after several hours they reached a compromise? Did they have to buy the rights to the phrase from anyone? Maybe a cheese maker or a lotion company.

I was no longer enjoying breakfast. I need to go back to work.

I know a perfect name for a company that makes kitchen alcoves in retirement communities: Nooks and Grannys. Or if Ocean Spray started enriching uranium: Nukes and Cranberries.

OK, I’m done. Sorry.
