Just a Formality

Last night was Erika’s 8th grade choir banquet. It was held in the middle school cafeteria and I was planning on wearing a Polo, untattered jeans, and sandals. Kara said it was semi-formal and told me to wear slacks and a button-down shirt. I know from experience that Kara always errs on the side of formality, especially here in Texas. I also know from experience that resistance is futile and spousal harmony outweighs over-dressing.

I will say that we looked good; Kara wore a purple dress and I even donned cufflinks. I couldn’t help but notice, however, that I was the only one there even with cuffs, to say nothing of the links. There was a guy in shorts and a tee. The emcee/choir director was wearing a sundress - on stage, microphone, handing out the awards, sundress.

I think when the locals hear “semi-formal” they don’t think “formal” and then ratchet down. They hear, “Don’t wear the stained flip-flops” or “Wear my best halter top.”
