Applause

Applause is a curious thing. Maybe I’m a 21st century snob but I think it a bit primitive. “Me like, me bang hands together, make sound.” C’mon, isn’t there a better way to show group appreciation? As mankind, we’ve figured stream videos to PCs 35,000 feet from the ground, without wires, but if we want to show an athlete, performer or student that we are pleased, we bang our hands together. Isn’t there an app for that?

There probably is and today it would have been handy. (No pun intended.) Natalie’s 5th grade graduation was this morning and we dutifully applauded each of her 115 classmates individually. I wish I had a device that you could push a button for enthusiastic clapping (for your child), a second button for regular clapping (A Honor roll, 100% attendance, student council) and maybe another just for the polite clap (A-B-C Honor roll, 64% attendance, and chess club alternate.)

Amen ... our applause gets diluted whenever we clap too much for less than extraordinary performance.

I hear ya and was there myself. As the clapping began for each child and then looking at the rows of 5th graders, I decided I needed to pace myself. Am I wrong?- I think there was only one child that did not make at least A B honor role. I also did not realize they would be name dropping all of the clubs, awards, etc kids were involved with. I felt like a slacker mom not having him sign up for any. :) I felt bad for the kids who had just one thing said about them. Way to boost the ego before sending them off to middle school. I guess you have been through this before and new what to exspect. I suppose if my daughters aren't cutting it grade wise by 5th grade I better sign them up for clubs so they can have something said about them as they walk across the stage. :)

didn't realize my comment had to pass your approval before you posted it. I would have checked my grammer and punctuation a little better. :)
