Father's Day Cookies

Yesterday at the close of priesthood meeting, the Young Women came into our class delivering little bunches of cookies wrapped in red cellophane for Father’s Day. The girl leading the pack went straight to her dad and handed him the cookies. The next girl carried a basket and went around the room to the eight or nine men in attendance and gave each his bundle. I was in the front of the room, having just taught the class and basket-girl apparently overlooked me. Maybe they were for the dads that went to work at least one day the past year! I was more interested in seeing my Young Woman than in cookies anyway. Then I saw Erika making her way towards me, cookies in hand. Obviously she had coordinated this delivery with basket girl. How great is that? I love my Missy.

At home I realized that I could use a cookie. I had just a hankering for something sweet, not full-blown hunger. At my desk I opened the gift and there were four chocolate chip cookies. They were perfect. As I was enjoying the first, I thought, “I could probably eat all four right now, but I shouldn’t. It is kind of a lot of sugar.” A few moments later as I was eating the second one, my wife saw the cookies and helped herself to one. I didn’t mind sharing; I mean they were good, but so far I was showing no signs of restraint; it was probably a good thing. Besides, I still had one more delectable cookie left.

Then my sweet fourth-born wandered into the study. She asked if she could have the last cookie. She smiled as I conceded it and the moment instantly became a highlight of my day. I’ll make that trade every time, and I don’t know a dad that wouldn’t.
