Greats

Kara’s father was in town visiting this past week. At one point he gave us an update on his 94-year-old mother. Erika said, “Wait. You have a mother?” We just looked at her. She continued, “I mean, your mom is still alive? I have a great grandma that is still alive?”

I felt terrible. Whose fault is that? Great-grandma Larsen lives in California and she last saw Erika in 1997. Sure, we swap Christmas letters but E doesn’t send (or read) them. I have had the pleasure of meeting six of Erika’s great grandparents and somehow I need to teach her about them, upon whose shoulders she stands.

This coming Monday night, I’m going to give the kids a pop quiz to see how many greats they can name, and then maybe we’ll focus on one each week.

great idea. Every once in a while Lauren (who has met her great's twice in her life) will almost in tears say, "I miss my great grandma and grandpa." I'm not sure if she is confused at who they are or if she really made some connection I wasn't aware of.

Greats are important people too!!
