Tuesday I got an automated message from the high school telling me that “my student” would be receiving an academic award at the upcoming ceremony and told me when and where. I told Kara and she went to put it on the calendar. I mentioned that the message didn’t say which of our two high-schoolers was receiving the award. She gave me a knowing look that said, “Nice try.” Our children are “National Honor Society” and “Thinks a ‘C’ is good” and by his reckoning, he is doing poorly.
Last night as we were gathering for prayer, Amanda whipped out a notice that said she was indeed receiving an academic award at the ceremony Monday. But then Ryan said, “Hey, I got one of those today too!” During one of his “struggling” c
lasses, the teacher got the notice and said, “Hixon, I don’t know how you did it but you are getting an academic award.”
He is pulling an “A” in Football off-season. Does that count? We can’t wait until Monday now.
(To be fair, Ryan’s grades have risen sharply in recent weeks. He has the brains, he just needs to apply himself and stay focused.)

Poor Ryan has Hannah syndrome. It's called, 'Why bother trying, I'll never catch the over-achieving first born!'
He's in good company. We all know he has the brains!
In case anyone reads these comments late, Amanda and Ryan were both recognized for making State with their 5-person vocal ensemble.
