To Tell You the Truth..

The other day I ate at McDonald’s. I “dined in” because I’m developing an aversion to drive-thru speakers given my vocal issues. Two men were eating in the adjacent booth and although I tried tuning them out, some of their conversation spilled over. One guy was clearly trying to sell something to the other guy. I didn’t hear a pitch or offer, but the “buttering-up” job going on was very greasy. You know, over-agreeing, over-laughing, and such. Then as the conversation turned more serious, I heard the butterer somberly say, “Now, I’m not gonna lie to you…”

I have a couple of problems with this. First, if someone has a business proposition and wants to discuss it over their-treat lunch, it better not be McDonald’s (unless they’re soliciting an investment in an antacid business.)

Second, please don’t tell me that you are not going to lie to me. I’ll assume truthfulness; it’s the least I can do. Prefacing a statement this way calls into question everything else that you’ve said, sans disclaimer. If you say anything that is obviously false, don’t worry, I’ll tune you out.

If someone wanted to sell me something, McDonald's (or Village Inn) would be the perfect place for the untruth to be spilled.

"No, no. I've got this one, you picked it up last time at Ruth's Chris, it's my turn."
