Squat

Late Tuesday night Roger (my brother) arrived in town. He brought his 1-year old daughter Olivia too which has been a joy for us. She is so fun and pretty. Last night while the older three were at mutual, Roger was helping Natalie with her spelling words. She asked that he provide her sentences that included the spelling words. The first one was “squat” and as only Roger can do he said, “I don’t give a squat about Natalie’s homework.” Natalie just said, “Squat. S-Q-U-A-T.” (I hope she doesn’t use that sentence in class.) Later he commented that these words seemed too easy for her. She agreed, and told him she could spell "echolocation." Then without warning, they began spelling it as fast as they could. They were racing. Natalie won. Roger asked for a re-match. There she was, going toe-to-toe with her 38-year-old uncle, spelling a science term of all things. (He’s a high-school science teacher.) She kept winning so he changed the challenge. “What kind of animal uses echolocation? Hmmm?” She rolled her eyes and said, “Bats.” He was no match for her. Here is a shot of Olivia taken Thursday morning.
