I before E except after C

I have never liked this cute little spelling rule. It doesn’t work. I know, there is an addendum – something about except in words with an “eh” sound like neighbor or weigh. With an addendum that long there should be no exceptions. But what about “weird” or “caffeine” or “reveille?” Maybe the rule should be “I before E except when it doesn’t.”

AMEN BROTHER! I'm a bad speller to begin with - throw a curve at me like this, and I'm lost.

YES! I've been hating that saying for a while... how about ancient?
