I have been in Phoenix for the last few days visiting family. Saturday night my 8-year-old niece Averey was feeling ill. Her mother, Amy, decided to let her sleep in and recuperate rather than go to church at 8:30 a.m. Both Amy and Eric had duties to attend to at church so Amy just left Averey a big note. She’d likely sleep most of the time we would be away, and she is old enough to care for herself.
After church Amy asked if she had been scared when she read the note and learned she was alone. She said that she wasn’t scared but did wonder why neither of her parents wanted to stay home with “their sick little girl.” She admitted that she knew they had church responsibilities but then said, “But then I wondered why Uncle David couldn’t have stayed home with his sick little niece.”
It was a very good question. Because he’s too wrapped up in himself sometimes? I apologized to her this morning.
