Van's Protege

The mortar surrounding several of the flagstones around our hot tub is cracked and the stones are loose. I did enough masonry work when I was 21 that I do not fear mortar and trowels, but that was a long time ago. But I don’t think that there has been too much technological innovation since 1986 in this field and I really didn’t want to fork out several hundred bucks for work that I could do myself. Kara is nervous about it. I think the trickiest part was finding chocolate brown tint to match the existing DSC04340 mortar. This morning I (almost) completed the first step: clearing the old mortar. When it cools off a little this evening, I am going to take a shot at setting the stones. Wish me luck.

The job is now completed but with hindsight I would have paid someone. It wasn't so much a matter of "know how" as "can do." Kara helped but it was a disaster. I mean, we did it, and I'll get a good look at it in the morning, but it resulted in some serious over-exertion. I waited until after 6:00 so it wouldn't be so blazing hot, but it was still too warm, and my body just doesn't do very well in warm. I need to learn my limits.
