Does peace ever expire?

Yesterday Erika and Natalie were bickering a lot. As punishment, I had them sit in the family room with me. No TV, no games, just sitting. “How long?” they moaned. I said only 10 minutes, but the clock resets with every new argument or mean gesture (e.g., sticking out tongue.) Half an hour later we were still there. I was in no hurry. They finally figured out that it was in their best interest to not speak to each other, which soon gave way to peaceful and playful conversation.

When they completed their penalty, I warned them that I would do it again if I heard any arguing. Natalie’s shoulders sagged and she asked, “For how long?” I told her the 10-minute rule was still in effect. She clarified, “No. For how long do we not have to fight? Just today?” I gave her a puzzled look but she bore on, “Can we argue tomorrow?”
