The other day some dude was collecting signatures outside 7-11 for some new county liquor sales law. His pitch was essentially that this new bill would simply replace the current three laws, streamlining our system.
That’s it? That’s all you got? Legislative efficiency? You expect me to believe that you are standing out here in the cold and approaching strangers to gather signatures to support a bill that does nothing more than streamline some paper work? Call me a cynic, but I had a hunch there was more to it. I did not sign.
Before I sign any petition I would like to know (1) what wrong it intends to right, (2) how this bill will help, (3) who is opposed to it and why, and (4) how does it stand to personally benefit the petition seeker. A of the following terms are ground for immediate dismissal: hard-working Americans, greedy executives, corporate coffers or the rich.
By the way, why did they choose to solicit outside 7-11? Probably to screen for alcohol consumers that had little time at the moment to really look at the issue. No, I don’t think I’ll trust anyone collecting signatures outside 7-11 unless it deals with something more directly related, like The Slurpee Reform Act or a “Funyuns as the 5th food group” petition. (I still may not sign.)
