Last night was the high school chorale spring show. I don’t know that I’ll ever tire of these shows. I mean I may, since this completes year 3 of what will probably be an 11 year string of having at least one child in the high school choir. There are three shows each year, so maybe after 18 or 19 I’ll be sated, but so far, no way. Not even close.
Last night’s show began with the boys singing “Do-Wah-Diddy” and then your token blonde “hottie” sauntered across the stage and the boys all watched her as they continued their song. I had one child in that number and unfortunately it wasn’t Ryan.
Amanda did not have a solo last night, but I noticed that every time she was on stage she stole the show with her expressions, her song, her dance, and yes, even her saunter. Ryan did have a solo, Barbara Ann, and he sang a full octave above where I expected it. It was all falsetto, by design. Wow. He did well, but we weren’t expecting that.
Later in the program there was a somewhat raucous number during which Ryan’s skin-tight green t-shirt rode about two inches up his torso. When he spun around I was disappointed that two inches of his boxers were visible. He was wearing a belt but nonetheless…They ended the number facing the back of the stage. Darn. Then everyone began applauding. I guess they liked the boxers. It was a LRO (low-rider ovation.)
In the final number the lights were dimmed and the kids swiftly reached into their pockets and produced glowing cell phones that served as a proxy for lighters. They waved them high above their heads. The move was smooth and seamless; I bet they didn’t spend any time rehearsing it. I did notice that in the interval from pocket to sky, Ryan did check his texts, and I think he may have sent one too.
Good times. I'm ready for 8 more years.
