Tread Lightly

When Amanda was a baby, Kara and I had a system for who had to change a messy diaper. In time we became immune to the displeasure. By the time Natalie was here, we didn’t even care anymore. I could do it with one hand (while eating a sandwich with the other.) Nowadays we tread lightly around the job of waking up Amanda, for anything. I gently tap on the door and could sweetly say, “Honey, it is time to get up for movies and Slurpees and no chores.” She would still bite my head off, saying something about 12 hours not being enough sleep or that she had her alarm set for one minute later so I ruined her slumber unnecessarily early.

Thus it was with a touch of glee that we took a call from Amanda’s drill team pals. They were planning an early morning “kidnapping” of all first year cadets. They were coming at 6:30 a.m.

Us to them: Good luck with that.

We let the two gals in and they stole up to Amanda’s room. They screamed as if there were ten of them, rousing Amanda and several of our neighbors (but not Erika.) But did she get mad at them? “Oh, Hailey!” was all she said. Wait a minute. Maybe I have been going about this all wrong.

Maybe someday we will become immune to this too.
